UTRID 2020 Sub for Santa | Bring the Holidays Home

Bring the Holidays Home with UTRID

UTRID 2020 Bring the Holidays Home from Webmaster UTRID on Vimeo.

My name is Marc Chance, and I am speaking on behalf of UTRID,  (Utah Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf). Now is again that time of the year, when UTRID hosts an exciting event known as Sub for Santa. This wonderful charity event sponsors families, who have faced unexpected challenges in recent months. Christmas may be a difficult time for some who are experiencing lean times. It is up to us in the community who are capable to make a difference in such people’s lives, and to make Christmas a little more merrier for them.

Some of you who may have participated in this event in that past will recall that we have had a giving tree at the Deaf Bazaar, where people would select items to purchase and donate at our cookie and donation drives. However, the COVID pandemic has compelled us to adapt the events towards a safer alternative for everyone. This event will be entirely virtual.

We are sponsoring two families. We have asked them to create wishlists with three or four items per member of the family. This year, we are having a wishlist on the Amazon Registry, which is open for everyone to view. If you would like to purchase an item on the wishlist, please do so. Purchased items will be sent directly to the families. In order to donate, please visit the link below and take a look at the list.

Alternatively, if you prefer to make a financial contribution, it can be done through PayPal or Venmo. The information for that is below. We rely on the support of generous individuals and businesses in our community like you. If you are able to sponsor this project with a donation, we would be most grateful for your support.

Thank you so much for your generous consideration of our request. We wish you a very happy and a safe Christmas, and to a time when we all can meet again.

AmazonTo send your purchase to the UTRID branch of Santa’s Workshop, please select the “UTRID c/o …” shipping address at check-out. Thank you so much for your generosity. Happy Holidays!

UTRID Town Hall Message

Last night was our Town Hall meeting with Dr. Carolyn Ball, Affiliate Chapter Liaison to RID, and Krystal Sanders, Region V Representative to RID.  The town hall was a forum for UTRID to voice their support or rejection for the RID Board to move forward with further research into what is required for RID to transition from a Member Driven Organization (MDO) to a Professional Certification Organization (PCO).

You can find more information about the Townhall and Transition here: https://rid.org/organizational-transition-overview/transition-faqs/ Additional information about the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) can be found here: https://www.credentialingexcellence.org/page/get-started-with-accreditation

Dr. Ball assured us that, should all chapters support the board doing a further investigation, all information gleaned from the research will be shared openly with all RID members. That information will be disseminated prior to a voting opportunity to accept or reject any proposals to change the framework of RID.

UTRID members had many questions and comments – most that cannot be answered until more information has been gathered.  Some of those questions/comments were:

  • How much would it cost for RID to make the transition to a PCO?
  • How long would it take for RID to make that transition?
  • How would a decision to transition to a PCO affect affiliate chapters, like UTRID?
  • How would that same decision affect Utah state certification processes?
  • Has RID involved NAD, and the Deaf perspective, in determining the best approach to transitioning?
  • We need a PCO in order to prevent future events, like the certification moratorium, becoming the membership’s decision.
  • Certification needs to be separate from member majority votes.  (Typically a RID Business meeting is poorly attended and roughly 200-300 votes determine whether proposals pass, even when online voting is an option).
  • Deaf community input/partnership is needed for both certification and the interpreting profession and that isn’t currently happening.
  • A professional organization accreditation would allow members to be recognized as professionals equal to nurses, accountants, medical personnel, etc. and not ‘helpers’ or support staff.

In summary: The UTRID Board and participants in the Town hall support the RID board in doing further research into accreditation.  President McConnachie must contact President Webb and let him know of our support before September 15, 2020.

If you have any objections to providing support, please email Kimm at [email protected] before Monday 9/14.  Otherwise, the UTRID board looks forward to learning more during the accreditation discovery phase and commits to keeping our membership informed.

UTRID Town Hall 9/10/2020

Join the dialog and stay in the know!

You are invited to UTRID’s virtual town hall on Thursday, September 10th at 7 PM. Carolyn Ball will lead an informative discussion regarding the future mission of RID—”A Member Driven Organization OR/AND A Professional Certifying Organization.” Learn more about the transition here on RID’s website and RSVP for live streamed admission below or click the link: RSVP Now

See you Thursday!
