Opportunity to support Thanksgiving at the Sanderson Community Center of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

Hello everyone! We have been given an opportunity to help serve and/or donate to an upcoming event for our Deaf, Hard of Hearing and DeafBlind community members.  See below for the message and links:

“I am so excited about this and so grateful that you are interested in sponsoring this upcoming FIRST Annual Community Thanksgiving Gathering on Nov. 25th hosted by Sanderson Community Center of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing!

As you know, a high number of our Deaf, hard of hearing and DeafBlind community members either are alone, isolated from their family members due to communication access limitations during holidays. Research shows that the rate of suicides are highest during the holidays due to people being alone or isolated. This shows how important it is for us to provide an inclusive place for all to gather and celebrate this holiday.

The plan is to host this from 11 am to 1 pm at Sanderson Center on Nov. 25th with volunteers to help serve, etc. We have set up a registration deadline for this by Nov. 19th and it will be limited to 50 people at the most and by Nov. 19th, I should have an exact # of how many people will be coming.

We are requesting that the donations be either as gift cards to Wal-Mart or WinCo OR buy the specific items requested and deliver to us by Nov. 24th. The reason we are requesting either gift cards or food purchases be brought to us is due to the red tape under State of Utah related to purchasing food. We would face a lot of roadblocks in purchasing food and this is where we really need you!  The estimated cost of all the food will be almost $750 so every bit that is donated would be greatly appreciated!

Deadlines for donations along with volunteering (serve or make): November 15th

Looking forward to your reply.

UTRID Membership Survey

Greetings from the UTRID President!

Hello beautiful members of UTRID! I’m Teddi von Pingel, the new UTRID President for the upcoming 2 years. I wanted to take this opportunity to check in with you and learn more about your needs, your goals, and how we as the UTRID board can change and improve to help you maximize your membership benefits.

The survey is linked below and may take you 10-15 minutes to complete.  The survey doesn’t require you to fill out your name and email address, but we hope you will include it and also be honest with your feedback and needs.

Survey responses are due October 1, however, if you complete the survey by 9/29 (NEW DEADLINE), all responses will be entered into a drawing for a cool prize from me or the UTRID board. (Don’t forget to include your name and/or email).

Your feedback is important to us! We can’t continue to run our UTRID organization without understanding your needs.  Kimm, as past president of UTRID for 5 years, worked hard to build interpreter unity and meet your needs.  Our hope is to continue building on that foundation as we grow our membership and meet member needs for  our Utah interpreters.   We welcome all ideas and feedback.

We look forward to getting your feedback.  Have a great day!

Dear Members of UTRID,

We would like to address some of the recent resignations in the RID Board leadership and express our support of those who have resigned. It saddens us to see such discord within our national community. We would like to thank the RID Board leadership and our Region V rep—Krystal Sanders—for their efforts within the RID organization. They worked diligently to develop an opportunity for us to learn about the diverse body of our organization through the workshops offered in the RID national convention. We stand in support of their decisions to withdraw themselves from continued service. We would also like to acknowledge and express our thanks to the HQ staff for their continued support during this time of transition.

These are historic times for our profession and RID as an organization. We invite you to keep abreast of the discussions happening within our professional community. We also urge you to actively participate in elections, town halls, and other activities as RID recovers and grows.

We will continue to serve our members (you) and follow our mission which is to initiate, sponsor, promote and execute policies and activities that will further the profession of interpretation of American Sign Language and English and the transliteration of English. We will continue providing learning opportunities and networking for our membership. We are particularly interested in providing workshops related to the issues affecting RID at this moment, namely: audism, racism, equity, and oppression, especially how they pertain to interpreting.

As testified by those suffering from it, oppression persists today. Audism and racism—among various forms of oppression—are present forces within our society and the lives of not only our colleagues but also those to whom we provide our services. To those in the margins, we see you and we invite your input on strengthening our community of practice here in Utah. UTRID commits to effectively listen to, collaborate with, and empower those among the minorities in our ASL community as we combat oppression and to create a better space that is safe and accessible for everyone.

Lastly, thank you for your dedication to the field, our consumers, and our network practitioners. We look forward to the future of both UTRID and RID.

Graciously,

UTRID’s 2021 Board of Directors
