UTRID presents…
Rooted In Community: Deaf Centered Interpreting Through Connection And Collaboration
Workshop Description:
Interpreting is more than language. It is about connection, trust, and cultural understanding. In this workshop, a panel of Deaf and hard of hearing consumers will share their lived experiences working with interpreters in a variety of settings. Through conversation, participants will gain insight into what fosters effective collaboration and approaches to providing Deaf centered interpreting.
The UTRID theme this year, “Root Deep and Branch Out” invites interpreters to strengthen their foundational knowledge while expanding their skills and approaches to meet the diverse needs of the clients they serve. This session will encourage reflection on interpreter practices, cultural humility, and strategies for building authentic partnerships that support access and equity.

Hello Colleagues,
We are rapidly approaching our immersion weekend in Bear Lake, only 25 days until we arrive at Bear Lake. Our wonderful colleagues on the UTRID board and Immersion Weekend Committee are volunteering their time, creativity and ingenuity to make this experience satisfy the needs of both our communities professional nourishing and growth, as well as our social and emotional nourishing and growth.
We have talked extensively about the challenges our community of interpreters are experiencing and the needs we have to know we are not alone. And to be surrounded by fellow interpreters and have live, real and, hopefully, meaningful connections. We know we can’t force that, but we can do our best to provide safe space, and a culture that supports connection with self-care and with each other.
We know the mansion offers unique spaces and challenges alike. We have done our best to mitigate the challenges (Hello, sleep spaces and our added individual options to counteract that). As well as leaning into the delights and play the large theater room, hot tub, pool and other amenities hopefully affords us all.
Although our kitchen isn’t mighty our food committee is, and we will have a smorgasbord of yummy things to enjoy. Including selections for a variety of dietary restrictions/options (make sure and list those in your registration).
We have discussed what we believe the current needs of our community are and tried to provide moments to treat yourself, including daily morning restorative yoga, and hopefully a few additional self-care moments and spaces.
We will also have workshops, including our keynote presenter Dr. Curt Radford. As well as a workshop facilitated by Clint Behunin–First Impressions: Improving Connections with Consumers (Honoring the work of Teddi von Pingel). Also, look for three more presenter announcements in our next email.
We are excited to offer out of the box activities focused on unique ELK development and brown bag discussions leaning towards diverse ways other professions and perspectives can extend to our own (For a list of the weekend’s scheduled activities see below).
For those of us who are nervous about fitting in and finding connection we will have activities set up that will allow natural engagement and give us all a place to start while intrepidly adventuring into new connections with colleagues and hopefully new friends.
It won’t be the same without you, please, register today for the most amazing experience. Come make your virtual connections live!

Hello, wonderful members of UTRID. Thank you for reading this post. My name is Tanner Vance, and I am the new president of UTRID.
UTRID’s purpose is to support you and the membership by providing professional development opportunities to benefit the Interpreting community and the deaf community as we enrich our professional abilities. The 2023–2025 board will soon gather for our annual board retreat, where we will plan for 2024, and we want to know your thoughts. We want your feedback regardless of whether you are Deaf, hearing, a certified interpreter, a novice interpreter, a student or CDI, or someone just starting your practice. We want your feedback, please.
UTRID has a history of impact throughout our state and is a recognized Affiliate Chapter nationally. The 2023 board wants to continue this legacy and growth, which requires your feedback. We believe striving to thrive is vital, and we do that as an organization by recognizing your needs (past, present, and future), how they have changed, and what new needs have become apparent so we can adapt our programming to benefit you. Before we can do this, however, we have to collect your input. This is where we ask for your help.
We’ve created a Google form, which is linked here. Filling the survey out will take about 10 to 15 minutes (15 max). The form will close in two weeks on Sat. November 11 at 10 PM. If you submit it before next Sat. November 4 at 10 PM, you may enter a three-winner prize drawing for a free ticket for the annual conference or a workshop next year. It will be a 2 1/2 day conference as opposed to last year’s 1 1/2 mini conference. It will be a fun-filled, excellent time!
I hope you can take the time to send in your thoughts. Your submission will be of value to us as we plan for next year, and you as our events can better match your needs. I look forward to reading your responses. Thank you and have a great day!
Click here to open the form in a new tab.

Do you ever ask yourself…
“Do I enter assignments with the proper mindset?”
“Am I interpreting in the right settings?”
“Do I know how to encourage myself and others?”
“Do I practice empathy and see multiple perspectives in situations?”
We believe the quality of services and care for your consumers starts with getting in touch with YOU as the practitioner. That’s why this year we are bringing you an ultra affordable one-day conference. Join us for our UTRID business meeting and a day full of workshops to help us revive our passion for the profession of interpreting!
