UTRID Board News – Change is coming

Hello UTRID Membership!

I wanted to make you aware of an upcoming change with the UTRID leadership.  I will be moving to Arizona on March 1st and as a result can no longer fulfill my term as President.  According to our bylaws, the Vice President, would be responsible for taking on that role.  Tanner Vance is the current UTRID Vice President and he and I have met and determined both his willingness and aptitude for stepping into this role.  Because the next elections would happen in August and the president position will be open, it makes sense for Tanner to act in the interim with support from other UTRID board and committee members. Tanner has been serving UTRID in various capacities for the past several years and will continue to lead our membership into innovative and creative spaces.  You are in good hands!

The next few months will be crucial for getting more volunteers to serve on our committees for Professional Development, Silent Weekend, and Conference.  Please consider if you might be able to provide support for those events and reach out! Your ideas for how to grow and shape UTRID are valued!

I first joined the UTRID Board as Secretary in 2006, the summer we moved here.  That was followed by 2 years as Vice President and my most recent terms as Professional Development Chair and President. The Utah interpreting and Deaf communities are like no other! I have always felt welcomed and needed as part of your communities.  I will miss seeing you all regularly and hope that if you ever need a sunny break, you will come down for a visit! You can keep in touch with me through email at [email protected].

Thanks again for your years of friendship and support!

Hugs and ILY Hands Waving!

Volunteers needed for DSDHH Thanksgiving Event

Hello all! Pamela, our Deaf Community Liaison, has asked me to reach out to you again for more volunteers.  Please consider giving your time on Thanksgiving to support our Deaf community members.

Hi everyone!

I am reaching out to you to see if you’d be interested in being part of our annual Thanksgiving Gathering on November 24, 2022?  I know you helped with our last Thanksgiving gathering and wanted to check in with you- we can’t do this without you. This is a great opportunity for us to give back to our Deaf, HOH and DeafBlind community members by being part of this and serving others

If you have not signed up for time slots to help out for the day before OR the day of Thanksgiving, please click on this to sign up: LINK Go to the 2nd link named “Volunteers Sign Up Schedule and Duties”

We also wanted to let you know that there’s a GREAT opportunity for you to come and do a BCI FAST at NO COST here at DSDHH and it’s tomorrow (Tuesday) between 5 pm to 8 pm!

We are offering this easy and quick opportunity since all volunteers are required to have a criminal background check as required by law before volunteering.

All you need to do is..

  1. Fill out this application- Volunteer application
  2. Email us at [email protected] to sign up for a time slot
  3. Show up for about 15 min to 30 mins then you can volunteer!

There are various duties such as setting up, washing dishes, keeping people company as needed along with food prepping.

Since food prepping and food serving is a big part, we really need more volunteers to have their food handler permits.

If you can’t make the in person event, you can take the course online, pay $25, Scan the receipt of your payment to me and I’ll have your reimbursement processed.

Any questions- feel free to ask!

Holiday Service opportunity

is it cold in here sign language GIF by Sign with Robert

Hello UTRID Membership! I hope you are staying warm…I can’t believe it’s so cold, so fast! We have been asked to share a service opportunity for the Thanksgiving holiday.  Please read below and sign up to donate and/or volunteer if you can. It’s a great way to support our Deaf community members during the holidays.

Teddi, UTRID President

“We (DSDHH) would like to host a Thanksgiving dinner for our community members who may have nowhere to go for this holiday on Nov. 24th from 11 am to 1 pm. Holidays is a very challenging and lonely time for many of our community members who may not have family or friends to spend Thanksgiving with OR be able to socialize in an inclusive environment utilizing their preferred modes of communication which may include signing.

We are seeking donors who may be willing to donate various food for this dinner (we prefer food items instead of money due to State of Utah’s policies if possible- could be already cooked or we can prep the donated food)?  It’s estimated that up to 70 people will attend so we will need enough food to cover up to 70 people.

If you are interested in buying items and donating to us, please go to this link and sign up for which items you’d like to purchase, etc.  https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1gnudB-Kz4FJmPveIF3wi_n5QEAoS7dY7/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=100068223787373814325&rtpof=true&sd=true

Let me know if you need more info about this.

We have received the following invitation from Pamela Mower:

Sanderson Community Center of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

30th Anniversary Celebration

VIP Guest Invitation

Hello! We are excited to share a very special event with you and extend an invitation to join us!  We would love to have you come since you’ve been a great ally to Sanderson Community Center in many ways. On Saturday, August 27, 2022, from 4:00 to 8:00 pm, the Utah State Division of Services of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DSDHH), housed at the Robert G. Sanderson Community Center of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing will be celebrating its 30th anniversary!

The Sanderson Community Center is unique as it is the only one of its kind in the U.S.A. Thirty years ago, a group of Deaf advocates, led primarily by Robert G. Sanderson successfully achieved funding to establish a “one-stop” center in which an array of services and programs could be provided to enhance the lives of people who are Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing and their families. The center has two locations (one in Taylorsville and one in St. George) which provides support services, American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter certification, educational workshops, cultural events and more in a barrier-free environment with full communication access. We are very proud of this achievement. DSDHH/Sanderson Community Center is a true Utah gem!

The celebration schedule will be as following:

4 pm to 6 pm– an open house where guests can explore the center and all it has to offer. There will be tours, multimedia presentations along with a play area for the kids.

6 pm – 7 pm – Appetizers and a social hour with opportunities to meet and mingle with community and local government leaders.

7 pm – 8 pm– A program will feature entertainment, local Deaf and Hard of Hearing leaders and guest speakers with commemorations and comments tying the past to the present and the future of the Sanderson Community Center.

We would like to cordially invite you to attend this special event marking 30 years of service to the Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing communities in Utah. Without the support of the state and people of compassion it would not be possible to offer such a wide range of valuable services. You and the organization/agency you represent are an important cornerstone of everything we do. Please join us in celebrating the legacy of our predecessors and our heritage as we launch into the next 30 years!

If you plan on joining us, please register before Aug. 22 at this link: Register!

If you have any questions, please contact Pamela Mower at [email protected].

In addition, Jeff Pollock has shared an employment opportunity for UTRID certified members if anyone is interested:
