As interpreters, we work hard with a heart of service to the Deaf community, and we become witnesses to the special, as well as the traumatic moments they experience. In this workshop, we will focus on what techniques and strategies we can use to help us in our day to day work. We will focus on how to find healthy ways of taking care of ourselves and avoiding burnout. 

This Workshop will be presented in person at the Sanderson Community Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (5709 S 1500 W, Salt Lake City, UT 84123)

We all have New Years resolutions, but how many of us really reach our goal? Choosing a word of the year is more specific and motivating. During this workshop, we will dive deep into discovering what you want to create, explore, and understand in your professional and personal lives for 2023, using one word as your guide for the upcoming year.

This Terp Talk will be presented in person at 316 W Winchester St. Murray, UT 84107.  Individuals attending are responsible to pay for food individually.

Nominations are being accepted for the following awards:

  • Interpreter of the Year
    • Recognizes an outstanding interpreter from our community who has been exceptional in professionalism, service, and attitude.
  • Kim Maibaum Lifetime Achievement
    • Presented to an individual who has spent a lifetime enriching not only the profession but also the members of the interpreting and deaf communities.
  • Ellen O’Hara Community Member of the Year
    • Recognizes an individual who actively supports the interpreting profession and exemplifies leadership within the deaf community.
  • Student of the Year
    • A student who has gone above and beyond in volunteerism and exemplifies leadership within their student community.

Utah RID invites you to submit Board Nominations!

Board positions will be voted into office during the Business Meeting of this year’s Bi-Annual State Conference—Level Up 2022.

Nominations are being accepted for the following positions:

  • Vice President
    • The Vice-President shall, in the absence or disability of the President, perform
      all duties of the President and in so acting shall have all the powers of the
      President.
    • The Vice-President shall serve as Director of Committees and oversee all committees operating according to the UTRID Bylaws.
    • The Vice President shall perform other duties of the office as prescribed by the Board of Directors.
  • Treasurer
    • The Treasurer shall maintain the financial records of the organization, making at least quarterly financial records of the organization, making at least quarterly financial reports to the President, maintaining the financial accounts, and making payments for authorized expenditures.
    • The Treasurer shall perform other duties of the office as outlined in the UTRID Bylaws and as prescribed by the Board of Directors.
  • MAL (Conference Chair)
    • The Conference Chair is responsible for forming a committee to plan and execute the Bi-annual State Conference & Bi-annual Mini-Conference.
    • Members-at-Large shall act as liaisons to the Board of Directors from the membership, working directly with the membership assisting with the coordination of activities and communications within the organization.
  • MAL (Professional Development)
    • The Professional Development MAL is responsible for forming a committee to plan workshops and Professional Development activities for the membership of UTRID.
    • Members-at-Large shall act as liaisons to the Board of Directors from the membership, working directly with the membership assisting with the coordination of activities and communications within the organization.
  • MAL (UAD Liaison)
    • The UAD Liaison is responsible for forming a committee to plan and execute the annual Sub-for-Santa fundraising drive. The UAD Liaison shall act as a liaison between the UTRID Board of Directors and the board of directors for UAD, coordinating communications between the organizations.
    • Members-at-Large shall act as liaisons to the Board of Directors from the membership, working directly with the membership assisting with the coordination of activities and communications within the organization.

Please see Article IV, Section 4 of the UTRID Chapter Bylaws for detailed descriptions of each position.

Michon graduated from the University of Floria’s ITP. She is Nationally Certified. She has worked in a variety of settings including Educational, Mental Health, Religious, and Video Relay. Michon has served RID as the 2015-2017 Vice Chair for the Interpreters and Transliterators of Color member section. Michon is the author of The Interpreter Journal.

This session will focus on cultivating effective co-interpreting and partnerships between deaf/hearing interpreter teams. The strength of a Deaf-hearing interpreting team in healthcare settings ultimately narrows down to recognizing the value of both interpreters that bring and overcoming potential challenges. With an emphasis on building and cultivating partnerships, it will ensure effective communication that takes place in healthcare environments to the benefit of all stakeholders involved.

Conference Delivery Format

COVID-19 has shifted everything in our lives and we had to LEVEL-UP everything around us. For the past 2 years, UTRID Annual Conference has been held online due to the State guidelines and to keep everyone safe and healthy. This year, 2022, we are excited to finally have an IN-PERSON Conference! Virtual options will be available for only part of the conference. One-day tickets will also be available for purchase.  We encourage all participants to be in-person for this 3-day conference as we gather back together for the first time in 2-years. If you would like to purchase partial conference tickets, please see the options below.

UTRID Business Meeting

As previously planned, the UTRID Business Meeting will be held Saturday morning, August 6th, 2022. Elections for available positions on the Board of Directors will be conducted in-person. Board positions on the ballot include Vice President, Treasurer, Conference Chair, and Professional Development Liaison.
